While they traversed the globe for the travel blog “Coordinates. A Serious Case of Travelling”, our two reporters covered over 100,000 miles and rediscovered destinations all over the world. From polar seas to dusty deserts and urban jungles, they had some unforgettable adventures and brought thousands of new memories home with them. They’ve packed in exciting stories, fascinating pictures and unique encounters.

And by their side was the silver suitcase from the Lufthansa Aluminium Collection – a steadfast companion on every leg of the journey. Our suitcase has gone through thick and thin. It’s taken off with a bush pilot, picked up a few scratches along the way and has had to put up with a lot. So, of course, it certainly has a few tales to tell!

Drifting silently through the blue

In a balloon over the Alps

From Austria to Italy in a basket, carried by 9.2 million litres of hot air. The journey in the oldest vehicle in the history of aviation was completely silent. Not a sound, not a peep. The passengers floated on the wind above the world. It was so peaceful, you could read the newspaper. Photographer Jens Görlich says, “I’ve never experienced anything like it. You’re standing there in the sky surrounded by nothing but air. The view is immense. There’s half of southern Europe spread out below your feet.”

Bossa Nova
in Rio de Janeiro

Brazil is the birthplace of the smoothest temptation in music history: velvety singing accompanied by alluring guitar chords. The song “The Girl from Ipanema” is well-known as one of the greatest hits of all time. Today, this enchanting music can still be heard in Rio. And among the bars, our reporters even met the most famous Bossa producer in South America – Armando Pittigliani.

Rio is famous for the caipirinha. Its name comes from the Brazilian word “caipira” meaning “little farmer” or “country dweller”, which is where the cocktail comes from. On that note – saúde! Cheers!

Svalbard

On Svalbard, Norway’s gateway to the Arctic, our reporters were met with snow, ice and the magic of the polar sea – and they also met the attendant at the world’s most northern fuel station.

Rockets for the gods

Thailand

Bright, vibrant, loud – Thailand! Our reporters were amazed when they arrived in Isan. Everywhere there was dancing, drumming, singing and a lot of gunpowder. During the Bun Bang Fai festival in May, Thais shoot giant rockets into the sky to please the gods and ensure rain for a bountiful harvest. In the thick of it: our suitcase from the Lufthansa Aluminium Collection. It was right in front of the launch pad and served as protection while clouds of dust enveloped our reporters. What a noise!

The car parked in front of the Four Aces Movie Ranch, a film set that has played host to stars such as Clint Eastwood and Lady Gaga. As our reporters sum up, “This is the American Dream as a perfect illusion. All the neon-coloured cliches condensed into one. At the end of the day, you sit in the bar expecting Tarantino to walk in followed by Elvis Presley and James Dean!”
